The tech industry has traditionally been male-dominated, but in recent years there has been a push to increase diversity and inclusivity, especially for women. In this article, we'll explore the current state of women in tech, the challenges they face, and the improvements necessary to increase their representation.

Representation of Women in Tech

Women represent only 19% of the computing workforce in the European Union, despite earning 57% of all undergraduate degrees and 52% of mathematics and statistics degrees. The disparity is even greater for women of color, who make up only 14% of the computing workforce.

Challenges Faced by Women in Tech

Women in tech face several challenges, including:

  1. Gender Bias: Women often encounter gender bias, where their ideas are not taken seriously, or they are paid less than their male counterparts for the same work.
  2. Lack of Role Models: The lack of female role models in tech can discourage young girls and women from considering a career in the industry.
  3. Unconscious Bias: Unconscious bias, where people make decisions based on their unconscious beliefs and stereotypes, can lead to a lack of opportunities for women in tech.
  4. Harassment: Women in tech are often subjected to harassment, which can range from sexist comments to physical assault.

How to address the issue

Despite the challenges faced by women in tech, there are several initiatives and programs that are making progress in increasing their representation in the industry. And today we are going to talk about one in particular. We are extremely proud to have partnered with The Women in Tech Global Summit, a 2-day event happening on May 22 and 23, 2023 in Paris. The theme ‘HERstory in the Making’, celebrates women across the world who are the Shakers, Makers, and Innovators of our new society and economy. It aims at connecting, inspiring, and catalyzing collective efforts to act for a more inclusive, sustainable, and innovative STEAM ecosystem.

The event will gather over 400 delegates: thought leaders from business, civil society, Government, and the Arts, from all over the world driven by the desire to change the status quo. The HERoes who are shaping tomorrow. This year we will focus on the topics of Web 3, Immersive tech, Cybersecurity, Sustainability, Financial and Digital inclusion, AI Ethics, and Digital activism.

The low representation of women in tech is indeed a problem that needs to be addressed. Women bring unique perspectives and experiences to the industry, and their underrepresentation limits the potential of the tech sector. However, progress is being made, and there are several initiatives and programs that are working to increase the representation of women in tech. By continuing to support and promote these initiatives, we can create a more diverse and inclusive tech industry that benefits everyone; so will we see you at The Women in Tech Global Summit?
